Equipment

Ingredients

  • 16.3 ounces refrigerated biscuit dough Gluten-Free: use a packaged gluten-free biscuit mix or homemade recipe
  • 2 1/2 cups water plus 1 tablespoon water divided
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 large egg
  • course salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the oven and bring water to a boil. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bring the water to a boil.
  • Cut biscuits into bite-sized pieces. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut the biscuits into 6 pieces (or 4 for larger pretzels). Pinch two of the ends together forming a nugget shape.
For Gluten-free: Prepare the biscuits per box instructions, divide the dough and use your hands to gently roll them into balls.
  • Add baking soda to water. Carefully add baking soda to the boiling water. Be careful as it will bubble up when the baking soda is added. Using a tong or slotted spoon, add a portion of the biscuit nuggets to the water, making sure they aren't overcrowded. Boil for about 20 seconds or until they start to get puffy. Use the tongs or slotted spoon to remove the dough.
  • Prepare the egg wash. Crack the egg into a small bowl, add 1 tablespoon of water then whisk with the fork. Using a pastry brush or spoon, coat each piece of dough with the egg wash. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Bake. Bake for 20 minutes or until the tops start to get nice and browned. Serve as is, or dip in cheese dip or honey mustard sauce.

Notes

  • Don’t overcrowd the water. This prevents the dough from sticking to one another while boiling.
  • Use the egg wash. It is important not to skip this step as it is key for a crunchy outside and soft inside. Have an egg allergy? Swap the egg for milk, butter or olive oil.
  • Sprinkle on seasoning. At the end of step 5 when the coarse salt sprinkled on is the prime time to customize. Add chili powder, everything bagel seasoning, garlic powder, Parmesan cheese or even cinnamon & sugar to the dough!
  • Serve as is or dip into a sauce. Cheese sauce and honey mustard are our favorite dipping sauces! Check out this delicious
