Why Use an Air Fryer for Kabobs
I know that everyone loves chicken kabobs cooked on the grill. Me too! But cooking outside isn’t always possible or convenient. If you don’t have a bbq, it’s too cold outside, or you don’t have time to stand over the grill, your air fryer is an excellent way to cook kabobs.
Your air fryer will circulate heat quickly, cooking your chicken in just 10 minutes. The outside will be lightly caramelized and golden brown, and your veggies will be perfectly seasoned and tender-crisp.
Can I put wooden kabob skewers in the air fryer?
Yes, you can use wooden kabob skewers in the air fryer, but you need to take caution. Just like when you’re using wooden skewers on the outdoor grill, it’s important to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using them. This will help to prevent them from catching fire during cooking.
Alternatively, you can use metal skewers if you want.
Air Fryer Chicken Kabob Ingredients
- 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon chives, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill, chopped
- 1 medium red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 orange bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 8 ounces whole mushrooms, cut into 1-inch pieces
How to Make
STEP ONE: Prep the chicken. Place the chicken into a mixing bowl. Add the melted butter, chives, and dill, stirring to coat the chicken.
STEP TWO: Assemble the skewers. Layer each skewer with chicken, red onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, and more chicken.
PRO TIP: Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before assembling your kabobs to prevent them from catching fire in the air fryer. You can also use metal skewers if you prefer.
STEP THREE: Air Fry. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Line the air fryer basket or pan with parchment paper. Place the skewers onto the parchment paper. Air fry for 10 minutes or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
Tips and Recipe Notes
- Try to cut your chicken and veggies into uniform-sized pieces. This helps your kabobs to cook evenly.
- Leave room between your kabobs in your air fryer. If they’re touching or your air fryer is too crowded, the kabobs won’t cook evenly.
- Your air fryer only takes a few minutes to preheat, so allow it to come all the way to temperature before you put your kabobs inside.
- Put parchment paper down on the bottom of your basket or tray. This catches all the drippings and makes cleaning up your air fryer a breeze.
What vegetables can I put on my kabobs?
Besides the ones I’ve used, you can try cherry tomatoes, zucchini medallions, baby corn on the cob, squash, or even Brussels sprouts. For a sweet flavor, add pineapple, papaya, or mango.
How to Store Leftovers
Leftover shish kabob meat is delicious and can be used to make all kinds of recipes. Just place your leftovers in the fridge wrapped in foil or plastic wrap for up to 3 days.
You can freeze your leftover chicken in a Ziploc or airtight container for us to 3 months, but I don’t recommend freezing the vegetables.
To reheat, wrap the food in foil and place it in the oven or air fryer at 350°F for 4-5 minutes or until hot through.
Are chicken kabobs gluten-free?
Yes! Generally speaking, chicken kabobs are gluten-free. But always check your own containers and ingredients to verify there are no hidden additives that contain gluten.
